GOLD TOWN CABARET – 4:50 p.m.

The club was quiet as Sway and I entered the main floor.

Wearing an autographed Lawrence Taylor jersey, the former NBA superstar, Dennis Rodman, was standing in the center of the room with the DJ’s microphone, delivering a few words, paying respect to Kobe Bryant.

Natalia, avoiding eye contact, was across the room, standing with Sarah.

We stood, listening until the music began. We then walked to the bar and took a couple of stools.

Sarah hurried over. “Hey, Andre…and, Sway.”

“So I guess Natalia is not talking to me anymore…”

“Oh, come on, Andre. You had to know she liked you.”

“She never told it to me and…”

“I know, you don’t see her that way. But she still had feelings for you. Once she gets over it, she’ll be okay.” Sarah pressed a roll of cash into my hand. “You got two hundred?”

“Yeah.” I looked to Sway. She went into her purse and removed two big bags. She held her arm low, handing them to Sarah.

“Oh, okay.” Sarah giggled. “We’re doing it this way now?”

“Something wrong with that?”

“No, not at all. I’m just asking. Actually, it’s smart. Keeps the eyes off you, right?” She gave me a hug. “Thanks, Andre.”

She motioned to Natalia. The two met and went on their way.

Sway looked to me. “She’s mad.”

“Sarah?”

“No, that other one.”

“You think so?”

“I know so. She’s not going to let it go… She’s going to try and fuck you over.”

CHEVRON – NORTHWEST HWY – 5:38 p.m.

I was alone when I arrived to meet Dan. Sway was back at the room cooking. Meatballs and spaghetti were going to be our very first home-cooked meal.

Dan was late again, making a big scene as he arrived. He’d grabbed his usual hundred sack and was gone.

I didn’t leave right away. I’d found myself sitting in the car, thinking about tomorrow and how the results from our tests could possibly affect our relationship.

What if Sway or I had something serious? What if one of us were infected with HIV? What about herpes?

How would I handle it? How would we handle it? Would that come between us? What was she thinking about right now? Are the same things running through her head?

I knew that I was completely in love with her, and I truly believed she loved me the same. Either way, my mind was made up, and I wasn’t going to leave her.

Using my phone, I went online to view my checking account balance. Sway was correct. I was spending a lot of money. I would have to hustle hard if I were going to put it all back.

I then did a Google search for the W Hotel downtown. I called and made a three-day reservation, booking the Extreme Wow Suite. That was a quick fifty-six hundred, but it didn’t matter; Sway was worth every penny of it.

I’d put the car in gear and was about to drive away when I saw Mandy’s Cadillac pull up next to me. She dropped her window. “What’s up, Andre?” She exited and walked over. “Are you working?”

“I’m tapped for bigs. I only have a couple forties…”

“I don’t have any cash… I really only need a bump.”

“What happened to your money? I’ve never seen you broke.”

“My man is watching me hard.”

“Rosebud?”

“Yeah, ever since I lost that bitch.”

“What’s her name…? Was it Sway or something like that?”

“That’s her… The one who sucked your dick.” Mandy grinned. “I know what she did.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Whatever… He beat my ass behind that shit.” She showed the bruises on her arms and along her legs. “He won’t let me get high at all. I can’t even fucking smoke!”

“Why do you put up with it? Leave.”

She laughed. “That motherfucker would kill my ugly ass on the spot if I ever even thought about it.”

“But if you could leave, you would, right?”

She pondered, looking around. “I guess every bitch would leave a motherfucker if she could have protection.”

“I don’t mean to another pimp. I mean for good. Like, get out of the game.”

“When you’ve been a ho as long as I have, Andre, it ain’t that easy.”

“I guess you’re right… I tell you what, you’ve been a good customer for a while, Mandy.” She perked in anticipation. “I’m going to let you have these two little ones.”

“You’re fucking with me, Andre?”

“No… Here.” She quickly tucked them into her bra. “Now, when you get your shit together and can pay me back, hit me up and I’ll meet you and grab it.”

“If not, you’re going to come looking for me…”

“I know you’re good for it. You’ll pay me back.”

“Thanks, man. I won’t forget this.” Mandy hurried into the mart. From my rearview mirror, I watched as she sped to the restroom.

As I drove home, I thought about what had just happened.

Did I, in my mind, somehow think that I’d paid Mandy back for rescuing Sway from her and Rosebud? Probably not, because I would have fronted her the coke anyway. I’ve always believed in taking care of my customers.

But…what’s going to happen when Mandy eventually finds out that Sway is with me?

Would it be easier to just call and tell her now? Would that help? Would she flip out and pass it on to Rosebud to maybe get some of the heat off of her?

JANUARY 27, 2020

GOLD TOWN CABARET – 5:38 p.m

We’d spent half the day at Planned Parenthood, where we were prodded, poked, had blood drawn, and were given a two-day wait for final results.

Sway was handing her ID to the door girl when Natalia and Sarah marched into the vestibule. “Andre, you sexy motherfucker!”

“Hey, Natalia.”

“Come with me, doll. We have to go and talk.” She peeked around me, tugging at my arm.

Sway grabbed my free hand tightly, standing her ground.

Sarah looked to Sway. “Hey, I’m Sarah.”

Sway gave a quick smile in return. “Hi.”

Natalia stepped closer. “Tell your little friend to have a seat out here. We’ve got business to take care of.”

“No, we’re all going to go in and we’ll talk together.” I reached back, placing my arm around Sway’s shoulders, positioning her in front of me as we entered the main room.

We’d taken a table near the second stage. I’d ordered a beer and a Red Bull for Sway. Natalia and Sarah both had a whiskey.

“Here, I got two hundred, Andre. Give me five.”

“You were ready for me, weren’t you?” Sway handed me the five sacks. I traded them for Natalia’s cash. Sway sorted out the bills, showing me the count. I looked to Natalia. “Thanks.”

“Really?”

“Really, what? Is something wrong?”

“Yes, something’s wrong.”

“What?” I looked to the shiny blue packets in her palm. “It’s right, huh? That’s five…”

“The coke is right.”

“Well, what’s the problem?”

“I’ll tell you the problem. You bring this little girl in here in front of me, a grown ass woman, and got her handling your fucking business.”

Sway leaned upright in her chair. “What’s it to you, bitch? As long as you get your shit…”

“Bitch?”

“Yeah, bitch!” Sway shot to her feet.

“You’re going to let her disrespect me like that, Andre?”

“Talk to me, not him. You just said you’re a grown ass woman, didn’t you?”

Sarah begged, pleading. “Girls, girls, come on… Calm down.”

Natalia came back. “Young, stupid, and jealous.”

“Of what? You? Why is he with me, ho?”

“If I wanted him, I would have had him from the start.”

“And if he was blind and stupid and had made that mistake, after spending five minutes in my company, he would have made the call, bitch. He would have dumped your old floppy titty ass.”

Natalia looked to me. “This is what I’m saying. You see what happens when you bring a child into adult situations?” She turned to Sway. “Why don’t you go outside and wait in the car. Then, when Andre is done talking with the ladies, he can take you home and let you play with your baby dolls.”

“Go home and play with your grandchildren, bitch. You should be retired anyway. Look at you… You’re day shift, B team… Worn out, thick… Crooked-legged bitch.”

Natalia weakened. Holding back tears, she darted towards the dressing rooms.

Sarah rose slowly, easing her chair to the edge of the table. “Wow, I’ve never seen her this upset. I’m going to go and check on her. Thanks for coming in, Andre. The girls needed you.”

I stood, comforting Sway. I looked into her eyes, studying her. “Go on, let it out.”

She broke, grinning impishly. “I didn’t start it.”

“You did finish it, though.”

“You’re so crazy. I love you.”

I didn’t know if there would be repercussions in the future, but I knew this battle was over, and it was a clear victory.

Sway jogged to the car ahead of me. She stood waiting, tightly clutching her jacket front as we entered. I started the engine and blasted the heater.

“It wasn’t this cold when we came in, was it?”

“No!” I checked my phone for the weather. It was forty-four and dropping. I turned to Sway. “I’m telling you something right now, and I don’t want a debate or a discussion about it. I’m taking you to the Galleria and we’re going to get you a proper coat, a jacket, and some clothes…”

“Okay, but not too much…”

“Sway! Shut the fuck up already. I’m getting tired of it, okay? Give it a fucking rest!”

“Okay… Alright, Andre.” She smirked. “Hook a bitch up. I’m fucking freezing.”

GALLERIA – 7:15 p.m.

We’d gotten lucky with a parking spot on the ground floor of the Blue Garage.

I’d suggested Macy’s. Before entering the women’s department, I’d placed fifteen one hundreds into her hand. Sway had found a sales lady. I’d stepped away, taking a stroll through the mall.

It was almost closing time when we were dragging her shopping bags on the way to the Apple store. I’d surprised her with an iPhone 11 Pro with all the accessories to go with it. She’d chosen the new purple.

On the way home, we called in to Pizza Hut and placed a to-go order.

After eating, we showered and were huddled up on the sofa for some TV.

Demi had called around 2:30 a.m. and slid by for a forty before heading home.

We’d called it a night at around 4:15 a.m. and got into bed. Sway spoke softly near my ear. “I don’t know if I can wait two days.”

“It’s really only about one day now. This one’s over.”

“Okay, I don’t know if I can wait one day.” She pressed closer. “I want you so bad.”

“I want you too.”

Sway lightly massaged my arms and chest. “You are so muscular, tall. So brown and beautiful.” She rose from the bed and walked to the bathroom. She quickly returned with a hand towel. She placed it onto the bed next to me. “Turn on your side.”

Sway climbed behind me, rubbing her hands together. I could smell the scent of lotion. She reached into my boxers. “Relax, baby.”

Her grip was firm but gentle. The slow and steady strokes increased in rhythm. Within moments, it was over.
