THE FAMILY – EPISODE #1.4 – “MY BROWN SKIN IS STILL BEAUTIFUL”

Freddie, Paco’s favorite server, peeked from his station. “Paco!”

“What’s up wit’ it, Freddie?”

“Everything is already.”

“Right?”

“I see you’re with a couple ladies tonight. How about a booth?”

“That’s what’s up.”

“Anyone you want, I’ll be right with you. Let me grab some utensils and some ice water.”

“Thanks. I appreciate you.”

“Paco removed his ringing phone from his front pocket as he slid across the thickly padded bench next to the window. “Hey… You have everything…? See you in an hour.” Paco ended the call.

Freddie approached, filling the glasses and laying out the silverware. “Are you ordering now or do you need a few minutes?” He placed three menus. Two by Paco and one across.

“I don’t even know what they want…”

“No rush… By the way, you just missed your ex.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.”

“She’s working again?”

“I’m more than sure. She sat for about an hour; didn’t order anything, and didn’t even speak to me.”

“Why is she acting that way with you? I thought you two were cool.”

“She was in here about two weeks ago, and I asked if she wanted anything to drink or if she needed a menu. She said no and that she was waiting for someone.

“I know the game, Paco. I don’t care that the girls come in and catch a rest, you know? But they have to respect my hustle, too. I had a whole family in here, and I needed to put some tables together.”

“She didn’t want to move?”

“Then started with the profanity in front of the children, so I had to leave it alone and take care of my customers, you know?

“In my younger days… Huh!” Freddie grinned widely. “Paco, I was a pretty motherfucker back then. My brown skin is still beautiful.”

“You’re still pretty, Freddie.”

“Tall, thin, and sharp. I had the diamonds, clothes, and always drove a new Cadillac. Every year… I still might get back out there, Paco. Get my perm back and grow out my hair. I’m receding a bit, but I’m not balding. Dye it jet black… It’s a young man’s game, but I think I still got it.”

“You still got it, Freddie.”

He looked out, staring dreamily with a semi-grin. Freddie nodded and pointed. “There’s her car right there. Red BMW.”

“London’s?” Paco turned. “I didn’t even notice it.”

“She left with a white guy in a new Mercedes… S Class, four door… Silver. He looked like he was close to my age… Mid-fifties, you know? They took off together.”

Blake led the way. “Window seat! Paco, you sit next to me.” Tawny nodded her approval. “What are we eating? Can we have breakfast?

“What about you, Tawny? You want breakfast too?”

“Sounds good.”

Paco looked to Freddie. “Bring us some of everything. Just…pile it up.”

“You got it.” Freddie pulled the menus and hurried away.

Blake turned to Paco, her elbow propped on the table top, resting her chin in her palm. She carefully studied his features. “Do you have a girlfriend, Paco?”

“I’m sure I wouldn’t be sitting here if I did.”

“You’re really cute. You have nice hair, teeth, you’re tall and brown. What are you?”

Tawny cut in. “He’s black and Spanish.”

“I’m black too, Paco. My mother is from New Orleans. She was pregnant with me when my daddy met her. He was down there for Mardi Gras, and they fell in love.

“He took her back to Tyler, and seven months later, here I was with a white daddy and a white-looking mama.”

“Did you ever meet your real father? Do you know who he is?”

“I know who he is, but I’ve never met him. He’s in prison…for life. He murdered a man, but he says it was in self-defense. I don’t know… I have a couple pictures he sent me.”

“What about his parents? Did you ever meet them?”

“When I was younger, I used to call them… They never had time to talk. It was always something. Then they stopped answering.

“My grandpa and grandma on my mother’s side… My mother used to bring me to New Orleans in the summers. I always had so much fun.

“They would send me Christmas and birthday gifts every year. They didn’t have a lot of money like my white grandparents, but they would mail me socks, gloves, shoes…and a pretty winter coat. It was so warm.

“When I told them I got my ears pierced, they sent me a beautiful pair of diamond earrings. But they came up missing from my room. I know my mom and dad sold them for dope.”

“Do you still talk to them?”

“I miss them so much. They were trapped in the house when the levees broke after Hurricane Katrina.” Blake’s eyes filled. “I called and called… That’s when I knew.

“My mother took me to the funeral… They never forgot about me. They loved me, but now they’re gone. Tawny is all I have in this world.

“So, why don’t you have a girlfriend?”

Paco quick-glanced the BMW. “Let’s just say that my last relationship didn’t go so well, and I don’t want to just settle. For me, it’s all or nothing. I want the perfect girl.”

“Do you think that you may have found her tonight?”

He looked to Tawny. “I may have, Blake. What do you think?”

“I already know.”

“I think that you’re right.”

“Tawny, do you choose Paco?”

“Yes.”

“Choose me?” Paco grinned.

“Do you accept?”

“I accept.”

“Then that’s it. It’s done.”

THE FAMILY – EPISODE #1.3 – “MAKE IT GO…MAKE IT GO FAST!”

Paco was seated behind the wheel when Tawny, Blake, and Katya exited the club. He made a mental note of their shabby sweats and sneakers.

Blake grinned widely as they approached. She looked to Tawny. “He drives a Porsche!”

Katya countered. “You must get something bigger, Paco, like Mercedes-Benz. This is toy.”

Paco reached across the center console, releasing the latch. “Hop in, I’ll bring you to your car. Where’d you park?”

“They are new girls, they don’t have car yet. They ride with you.”

Blake entered, sliding easily to the rear. Tawny carefully handed Blake their suitcases before taking the passenger seat.

“You watch after them, Paco.” She looked to Blake, then to Tawny. “Have a good night, darlings. You’re in good hands now.”

NORTHWEST HIGHWAY – TRAVELING – 2:23 a.m.

“Paco!”

“What you say, Blake?”

“I have a question?”

“Okay…”

“Is this the GTS?”

“The 4GTS.”

“And it’s a cabriolet too. This is so awesome!”

Tawny looked to Paco. “What year is it?”

Blake cut in. “It’s a twenty seventeen. It’s brand new!”

Tawny continued. “Is it gray?”

Paco grinned. “It’s called Aventurine Green Metallic.”

“It’s gray-green.” Tawny ran a careful eye throughout the cabin. “This is nice, Paco… At least you didn’t get red. I hate red convertible drivers. They like attention. And we know you don’t need a lot of attention.”

Paco chuckled. “Ooh, that’s low.”

“I’m just saying, that’s all.”

“Paco!”

“Yes, Blake.”

“I want you to do something.”

“What is it?”

“I want you to get on it! Make it go fast!”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes!”

“Are you sure, sure?”

“Yes!”

“Okay, Blake, here we go.”

Paco downshifted, slowing to a crawl. Blake nestled in anticipation, gripping the thigh bolsters tightly. “Listen at it, Tawny! Listen at it!”

“Ready?”

“Yes!” The flat six roared to life as Paco stabbed the pedal, shifting through three gears before decelerating. “Wow! This car is so fast! Did you feel it, Tawny?!”

“Yeah, maw, I felt it. Blake loves that. She’s a car nut.”

“Looks like you loved it too. Am I seeing a grin?”

“I’m grinning because she’s laughing.”

“Okay…”

Blake leaned forward between the seats. “Paco, we’re getting an Escalade. The V-Series.”

“That’s the big one.”

Tawny relaxed in her seat, facing Paco. “That’s what we’re working towards. We save all our money. We want to pay cash.”

“Tawny has the driver’s license, but I’m the better driver. I can drive anything, Paco.

“My grandfather owned a farm. He taught me how to work the tractor and all the heavy equipment when I was nine.

“I used to sneak out in my parents’ car whenever I wanted to. One year they were wasted and forgot my birthday. I took the keys and went to the Shell and got me some ice cream and cake.” Blake paused. “I used to have a really nice house. It was two stories, and we had a pool.

“After my grandfather died, he passed the gun store to my dad. That’s how we had money… What kind of guns do you have?”

“I never carry a gun, Blake. I don’t even own one.”

“You don’t own a gun?!”

“I don’t ever want to be caught with…”

Tawny cut in. “With dope and guns?”

“Yeah… So what happened to the store?”

“My dad and my mom started smoking crack, then meth, and they sold everything off. They lost it… It was supposed to be passed on to me. That was what my grandfather wanted. He told me himself.”

“I’m so sorry, Blake.”

“That’s okay, because I wouldn’t have moved to the park and met Tawny.”

“The park?”

“Tawny didn’t tell you we’re from a trailer park?”

“I hadn’t told him yet… We just met.”

Paco looked to Tawny. “You’re not ashamed, are you? It’s not where you come from.”

“I’m not ashamed.”

“Where are your folks? What do they think about you moving to Dallas to dance?”

“I don’t know where my mother is. She left when I was sixteen. That was right about the time my daddy was pushing up on me…hard. I then started staying with Blake.”

“You had to get out of there.”

“He got what he deserved. Someone went in and shot and killed him with his own gun.”

“At least you weren’t there when that happened… You didn’t tell me you’d lost your father. That’s something we have in common.”

“You had a father, Paco. I had a fucking monster.”

DENNY’S – WALNUT HILL – 2:57 a.m.

Paco turned into the lot, finding a spot towards the side entrance.

As they entered the vestibule, Tawny took Paco’s hand, holding him back. Blake darted inside towards the restroom.

They stood close to each other between the two closed doors. “There’s a lot of dysfunction in my past, Paco. Can you handle that?”

“I’m good.”

She wrapped her arms around him. “Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure.”

They pressed tightly, locking into a passionate kiss. Tawny parted. “That was lovely… I’m gonna go and find Blake, okay?”

“I’ll get us a table.”

THE FAMILY – EPISODE #1.2 – “SHE THINKS YOU’RE REALLY HOT”

DOUBLE PLATINUM CLUB – 10:32 p.m.

“To work here?”

“We’re on a mission, Paco.”

“What kind of mission?”

“We put a plan together to make a lot of money.”

“Servers don’t make much, do they?”

“She wants to dance, but I have to school her up. She’s a little too shy right now.”

“What is she? Sixteen?”

“No, silly, she’s twenty-two.”

“She looks too tender to even be a server. A dancer?”

“She’s shy, Paco, not tender. She has a mean streak.”

“Her? That girl?”

“Don’t let that innocent face fool you.”

“I’m looking, but I don’t see it.”

“I feel sorry for anyone who crosses her.”

Paco turned to Tawny. “So, what’s this plan of yours?”

She smiled. “It’s just a plan.”

“You’re not going to tell me?”

“You may know sooner than you think.” Blake was holding her tray propped level at her hip as she approached. “Hey, maw, how’s it going? Are you making anything?”

Blake dug into her pocket, removing a few loose bills for view. “It’s slow, and they’re being cheap.”

“Don’t worry about it. Put that up and hold onto it. I did well. We’ll be alright tonight, okay?”

“Okay.”

“Hey, meet my new friend Paco. Paco, this is Blake.”

Blake extended her hand, following with a curtsy as he held the tips of her fingers. “Hello, Paco.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you.” She giggled, cupping her hand to Tawny’s ear. “What’s funny? What did she just tell you?”

“She thinks you’re really hot.”

“Thank you, Blake.”

“Hello, my darlings!” Paco, Blake, and Tawny turned to the female voice. “I was going to introduce you two to Paco, but I see you already met.

“Give me a hug, handsome!”

Paco stood. “Hey, Katya.”

The hand-to-hand was quick. Tawny watched as she stuffed the wad of bills into his palm in exchange for the cellophane-wrapped piece of solid.

Paco’s cautious eye caught Tawny spying the exchange. He easily read her muttering whisper. “Dope boy.” She followed with a wry smile, steering her eyes away as she sipped from her straw.

Katya continued. “Girls… We never had boys like this when I was girl in Russia. We would be married now.” She grinned. “It is too late for me. I could be his mother.”

She placed her hands on her hips. “Besides, Paco may not know what to do with full figured woman like me. I have dark hair and blue eyes like you, Tawny, but I am sure he likes the thin.

“Let me go serve my VIP, darlings. I will be back. And Paco, you do not leave… You wait for me, okay?”

“Sure, Katya. I will.” Paco paused, watching as she walked away. He then turned to Tawny. “So, do you have a problem with it?”

“Your hustle?”

“Yes.”

Tawny rose from her stool, placing her cheek to his. She whispered into his ear. “I don’t like the game, but I love a man who’s willing to risk everything.” She bit lightly on his lobe. “You do you.”

“Would you like to hang out sometime?”

“We’re not doing anything when we get off.”

“You’re talking about Blake, too?”

“Wherever I go, she goes.”

“I’m good with that. Let’s get some food or something.”

Blake cut in. “I’m starving.”

Paco checked his phone. “They’ll be shutting down in about thirty minutes. I can hang out front and wait for you… I mean you and Blake.”

There was a warmth across Tawny’s face. “Okay, I’m going to try and get a couple more dances.” She pressed, giving him a hug. “I’ll see you after I cash out.”

“Tawny!” She spun around with a smile. “You were right!” He lowered. “You were right… You do have that booty.”

Paco was standing, waiting in the vestibule, when Katya charged towards him. “Are you leaving? Don’t go yet. You take Tawny for breakfast. You wait for her here until she comes out. Wait here, I will get her… Do not go.”

“Katya.”

“Wait here, Paco. You stay, okay?”

“Katya.”

“What?”

“We already talked about it.”

“When, Paco? I’m not talking about some later date. You take her now.” Katya stepped closer. “Do not miss this. This is perfect girl for you.”

“I am talking about tonight. All three of us.” Katya’s eyes narrowed. “What?”

“Give me your keys.” She opened her palm in front of him.

“I’m not giving you my keys.” Katya reached into his pockets. “What are you doing?” Paco laughed as he pushed away her hands.

“Paco, these are good girls.” She softened. “I need you to take care of them…for me, okay?”

“Okay.”

“Tawny is three years older and thinks she is mother of Blake. I do not want them to get caught up with… You know how I feel about my girls.”

“Come on, don’t get emotional on me. Wipe your eyes… You can’t start crying.”

“You look out for them. Will you do that, darling?”

“I will. You have my word.”

THE FAMILY – EPISODE #1.1 – “PACO…I LIKE IT, I THINK IT’S CUTE”

OCTOBER 10, 2021

HOME – 8:45 p.m.

It was late evening when Paco arrived. He’d emptied his pockets, dropping the lumps of cash onto the coffee table.

He lowered himself into the plush leather sectional and reached for the remote.

It was the middle of the third quarter, and Zeke was high-stepping into the end zone for a touchdown. Brett Maher capped the drive off by adding the extra point to extend the Cowboys’ lead against the Giants to twenty-four to thirteen.

Paco sorted out the bills by denominations, edging the corners, facing, and stacking them into neat piles of tens, twenties, and hundreds.

He reached into his boxers, pulling out the cardboard matchbox from between his scrotum and thigh. He slid it open, removing the two eight-ball sacks of cocaine, clutching them into his palm.

He sighed as his mouth widened into a yawn. His eyes heavied.

He again looked at the cocaine. A gentle smile formed on his face as he began to reminisce.

JUNE 20, 2022

DOUBLE PLATINUM CLUB – 10:18 p.m.

He’d just walked in, taken a seat at the bar near the entrance, and ordered a beer when he heard the sound of a sweet voice. “So, how did you get the name Paco?”

Paco smiled. “My mother called me that since I was young.”

“I like it. I think it’s cute.”

“So, how do you know my name? I would have remembered you.”

“We’ve never met.”

“So, again, how do you know my name?”

“I have my ways.” She stalled, panning the room. She giggled. “I heard the bartender say it.”

“What are you drinking? Can I get you something?” Paco signaled.

“A Red Bull… With a straw.”

“Now, tell me your name.”

“Tawny.”

“Nice to meet you, Tawny.”

The two locked into a stare. Tawny quick-glanced her drink as it was placed upon a napkin. She lifted the can in a toast. Paco returned the gesture. “Thanks for my drink.”

“It’s my pleasure.”

“You have a very interesting look.” Tawny studied his features. “You’re like some kind of an exotic mix…of all good things. Is your mother or father Mexican?”

“My dad was black, and my mother is Spanish. Her parents are from Spain.”

“Did I hear you say your dad was?”

“Yeah, he was killed.”

“I’m sorry, Paco.”

“That was fifteen years ago. I was eleven.”

“How did he die? That’s if you don’t mind me asking.”

“A deal gone bad.”

Tawny paused. “I’m sure he was so handsome… I bet you look just like him, too.”

“Are you flirting with me?”

“Can’t you tell?”

“I don’t like to assume. I like to be sure.”

“I’m flirting.”

“Okay, well, you’re not so bad yourself, Tawny. You look a little mixed, too.”

“I did my DNA, and I have like six percent Sub-Saharan African in me.”

“I can see where it’s at. You have the blue eyes, but you have the lips like a black girl.”

“I got that booty too. And it’s all real.”

“I like booty. Stand up right quick. I want to see how tall you are.”

“No… Not right now.” She smirked. “A little later.”

“So you’re gonna make me wait to see dat ass, huh?”

“Yup.”

“I’d still like to see how tall you are. You don’t have to turn around.”

“You want to know if we’re a good fit?”

“Yeah.”

“I can’t take off my stilettos, but we are. I can tell.”

“How?”

“You’re about six one?”

“Two.”

“If I hug you in flats, my head will be right in your chest… Perfect.”

“Yes, you are, Tawny. You’re very beautiful. I’m sure you’ve heard every compliment that I could ever come up with, especially while working in a gentleman’s club. But, I’m speaking from the heart. I really mean it. There’s something about you. I can’t explain it.”

“I feel it, Paco. Since you came in through those doors, I haven’t taken my eyes off you…

“I was talking to myself, wondering, who is this cute, sexy man with the curly hair and all those muscles?

“I knew that I’d better say something before one of these other girls got to you first… Then you sat right next to me? That was when I knew.”

“Tawny… Do you believe in…?”

“Love at first sight?”

“Yes.”

“If I didn’t before, I do now.”

Paco peered slightly above Tawny’s shoulder. “I can’t help but to notice that server. She’s been watching us.”

“Who?” Tawny turned.

“She’s across the room. She has the long ponytail.”

“Oh, that’s my girl, Blake.”

“Blake?”

“Yeah, isn’t she pretty?” Tawny beckoned with a wave.

“Pretty? Tawny, she’s drop-dead gorgeous. She could be a movie star.”

“We grew up across from each other in Tyler.”

“Tyler?”

“We moved here to Dallas a month ago.”
