DOPE BOY CHRONICLES – EPISODE #1.31 – A SPECIAL PLACE

FEBRUARY 2, 2020 – ELECTRIC BOUTIQUE – 7:46 p.m.

Sway went with classy dresses and super sexy two-piece outfits, all by Roma.

Along with a collection of t-backs and panties, she’d added rhinestone bracelets, necklaces, chokers, and an assortment of earrings as accessories.

There was a pair of ten-inch patent leather, shiny knee-high boots that she couldn’t live without. She also got three pairs of stilettos. Two black and one clear.

The total came to seventeen hundred sixty-three dollars and twenty-six cents.

After settling at the register, we loaded up and drove away.

“Sway, let’s get some seafood.”

“Seafood?”

“Yeah. Pappadeaux’s is right across the highway.”

“Andre, we just spent a lot of money. I can make you something at home.”

“Nah… This is going to be a special night. I want to show you something later.”

She smiled. “Okay. When you put it like that.”

PAPPADEAUX SEAFOOD KITCHEN – 8:40 p.m.

We’d both ordered the shrimp and catfish fillets. They were served with French fries. Sway had a Coke, and I had a beer that I shared with her.

“You know, Sway. I’ve been thinking. Ever since Demi met you, I haven’t heard from Holly anymore.”

“You think something’s there?”

“I’m not sure… It’s like… I just have this gut feeling.

“Like, Holly was so glad to find good quality, you know? Like, connecting with me and my coke was the final piece to her hustle.

“She’s got the girls, the customers, and now she has some good coke.”

“Maybe she found another hookup.”

“Maybe… That could be it… So, you ready for tomorrow? Are you nervous?”

“Not when I think of all the money I can make for us.”

“You are confident.”

“I was always confident… But, I’d lost it for a time until someone came along and helped me get it back.”

I grinned. “I’m assuming you’re talking about me.”

“No one else.”

“I appreciate that, but don’t forget. You regained it on your own. You’d already made up your mind and were getting out of there. I just happened to be at the right place at the right time.”

“It was seeing you and being around you that snapped me out of it, though.”

We smiled. “Okay, I’ll accept that.”

“So what do you want to show me. I can’t wait.”

“I want to bring you to a special place. At least it’s special to me… It’s no big deal. It’s just somewhere I go when I have something heavy on my mind.

“I like it because it’s quiet… It’s in a neighborhood, believe it or not, but at night, you can hear a whisper from one side to the other.”

“Side?”

“It’s a lake. It’s got a walkway around it. A little more than a mile. Of course, there are benches and lots of trees.

“I usually sit in the gazebo, looking across the water, watching the fish jump and the ducks swim by.

“Sometimes at night, I grab my blanket and go down and lie on the grass and just look up at the sky.”

“I love it, Andre. When are we going?”

“Let’s go now.”

LAGO DE CLAIRE – 9:24 p.m.

“This is beautiful. It’s just as you described. It is quiet. It’s like everyone’s in bed.”

“It’s always like this around this time. You might find a jogger or two after ten, but by twelve, there’s no one.”

“What are you doing?”

“I have an app that shows where the planets and constellations are.” I tilted and panned my phone. “Fuck, we’ll have to come back earlier…” I pointed down. “Here, look… You can see… We missed Saturn and Jupiter. They’re just below the horizon now.”

“I can see them on there, but how were you going to see them in the sky? You have a telescope?”

“You don’t need a telescope. You can just see them.”

“I’ve never seen a planet, and I look at the sky all the time.”

“You have, but you probably thought it was a star.”

“Ahhh. Why they never taught us this in school?”

“Science? In Texas?” We laughed.

“How’d you get into it?”

“I was online one evening and I saw that the International Space Station was going to be visible when…”

“The what?”

“The Space Station.”

“What is the Space Station?”

“It’s where the astronauts live… When they’re up there doing experiments.”

Sway stared, half-grin. “Why are you fucking with me, Andre?”

I chuckled. “No, I’m serious.”

“So you’re saying that you can see this space, whatever, passing over the sky at night. I’ll buy the seeing the planets, but this is pure shit. How?”

I laughed. “Actually, the same way as you see the planets. The sun shines on them. The same with the Space Station. It’s got these large solar panels that reflect off the sun. It’s like two hundred and fifty miles up in space and when it comes over from the horizon…”

Sway grinned. “Okay, okay. I got it. That makes sense.” She turned, looking up to the sky. She stared at the stars. “And you’re sharing all this with me.”

“You’re the only person I’ve ever brought here.”

“This is a special place, Andre. Thank you.”

DOPE BOY CHRONICLES – EPISODE #1.30 – SWAY IS READY TO WORK

HOME – 2:20 a.m.

“Was that Demi?”

I set my phone on the coffee table. “Yeah, she’s on her way.”

“I’ll get it.” Sway retrieved a forty sack. “How close is she?”

I stole a peek out the window. “She’s pulling in now.” I tossed on a jacket and stepped into my slides. “I’m going down to let her in.”

Demi was on the other side of the door when I opened it. “It’s fucking cold out here.”

“We were out earlier, and it was almost sixty.”

She followed me up the stairs. “Dallas weather. If you don’t like it now, just wait a couple hours.”

We entered. “Hey, pudding!”

Sway smiled in return. “Hey, Demi.”

Demi gazed at the forty sack. “That looks good, Andre.” She peeled two fresh twenties from her wallet, placing them onto the table.

“You worked tonight? You’re off on Saturdays, right?”

“I had one of my regulars come in.”

“Ah, you made money.”

“Hell yeah, I did. I just wish I had a couple more girls. I could have used them.”

“Well… Sway’s ready.”

Demi was mid-snort on her second scoop. “Really?! When?! Do you want to start right away?! I’ve got one of my best customers coming in on Monday. You’d be perfect! Oh my god, you’d get paid well… Very well. I promise you. Easy money! Do you have something to wear?”

“Andre’s taking me shopping…”

“We have outfits at the club. I can set you up with the house mom. She’ll do credit on my word. She can even do alterations to make sure…”

“I have my mind set on Electric Boutique.”

“Oh, but they are so expensive.”

“It’s okay.”

“You have your driver’s license…or an up-to-date ID?”

“Yeah.”

“Perfect! Can you be there at five?”

Sway looked to me. I cut in. “I’ll drop her off.”

“Awesome!” She turned to Sway. “I’m scheduled for seven, but I’ll get there early so I can go over everything with you and introduce you to the night manager. He’s laid back. You’ll have no problems at all.

“Then I’ll introduce you to all the cool girls; the ones you want to be around, and I’ll point out the ones who are trouble.”

Demi took a couple more draws. “We have a makeup artist too if you want, but I wouldn’t do too much dolling up. You have that young girl thing going for you. Older guys love that.

“Make as much money with it while you can. In a couple of years, that kind of customer will have found the next round of eighteen and nineteen-year-olds.

“But I’m going to get out of you guys’ hair. I’ve got to let the dogs out and take me a long, hot bath. My feet are killing me!”

“You need me to walk you out?”

“Oh, no, Andre. I’m okay.” She looked to Sway. “And I’ll see you Monday, pudding. Just relax and don’t worry about anything. Like I said, easy money.”

Sway countered. “What’s to you?”

“Huh…?”

“You keep saying easy money. What’s your cut? How much to you?”

“Oh… Don’t worry about all that. We’ll sort it out Monday.” Demi’s eyes darted, shifting, reading our faces. “Just a little something for the hook-up. I’m not greedy.”

Sway was straight-faced, laser-focused. “I guess we’ll see Monday.”

Demi softly closed the door as she left. I turned to Sway. “Now that I did catch.”

“She’s trying to play me.”

“As long as I’ve known Demi… I didn’t think she’d go out like that.”

“She’s retired in the game, Andre. The only way she can make any real money is to find young, dumb girls.”

“Do you want to try somewhere else? Maybe another club?”

“And miss that trick? That sounds like a lot of money for us. I definitely want to see what that’s about.”

“Do you think she’s still going to go through with it?”

“Because I called her out?”

“Yeah.”

“As hard as she’s pushing, I’m thinking she’s impossible to work with and no one wants to fuck with her. She needs me… But, I don’t really want to talk bad about her because I respect that she’s one of your regulars…”

“Fuck that bitch if she’s trying to go in our pockets.”

“I’ll figure out who’s who.” Sway grinned mischievously. “I can’t wait to meet Jeanice and Holly… Get their take on Demi. I’m sure it’s a different story.”

DOPE BOY CHRONICLES – EPISODE #1.29 – “JUST RELAX AND DO WHATEVER”

HOME – MIDNIGHT

We’d stacked the loot into a heap on the coffee table. Sway was edging and facing as I did a count. “From what we sold and what you got off Mandy, we got about fifty-eight hundred right here.”

“How much do we have altogether?”

“You mean from what’s in the bank and everything?”

“Yeah, like where are we?”

“With this, what’s in the bank and what we already had, we at about ninety-six or something.”

“Plus, we have those hundred bags.”

“And the forties you made for Demi.”

“We should be good, right? Until I go to work.”

“I’ll look for another plug, though. I might be able to find something.”

“Baby, don’t go searching for trouble. Stay with your hookup. Why take that risk? You said yourself that the quality won’t be there.”

I softened. “When are you talking about starting?”

“As soon as it’s okay with you.”

I leaned back. “I’m not even sure if I want you to, but I’m learning that once you’ve made up your mind, it’s made up.”

Sway grinned. I continued. “So like, what the fuck am I supposed to do all day? I’m ’bout to run out of coke to sell in a day or two. And you don’t even want me to pick you up or drop you off.”

“Just relax and do whatever. You’ll find something to keep you busy.”

“Hustling! That’s what keeps me busy. All day, every day. I’m a hustler and that’s what I do, Sway.”

“Hustlers need a break sometimes. You like the movies… The classics and old school. Hang out at the Angelika. Take the train.”

“Now you’re trying to be funny.”

“No, I’m not. I’m being real. Enjoy yourself.”

“So while you’re dancing and bringing in the only money we’ll have coming in, I’m supposed to do nothing and watch movies all day.”

“I can get you a PlayStation or one of those game things.”

We broke into laughter. “Now you’re…”

“Yeah, I’m being funny… But let’s look at it like this. You’re the head of the house. They are things that need to be handled, right?”

“Bet.”

“Be out handling that… Depositing the money. Making sure the bills are paid on time. Bring the car in for repair…”

“You’re looking at this like it’s a business.”

“And you’re the CEO.” She paused. “Just give it a chance and see how we do. If you change your mind, by that time I’m sure your connect will be back.”

“What about outfits? What are you going to wear?”

“To work in?”

“Yeah, we have to get you geared up, right? You can’t go in there looking like a clown. You have to represent. This is a business!”

Sway smiled. “We can go shopping. But I don’t have to have everything right away… Just enough to get started, and I can…

I threw up my arms in mock protest. “Here we go again…”

She laughed. “I’m sorry. I just don’t like to spend when you don’t have to.”

“Fuck that!”

“Alright.”

I switched gears. “So, where did you get those hands. I didn’t know you could scrap like that.”

“I studied Karate since I was young… Made it all the way to my brown belt.”

“That teacher must have been white.”

“Japanese… From Japan.”

“Hold up. So your parents wouldn’t let you take gymnastics because the teacher was black, but they let you do Karate with a Japanese teacher?”

“My dad doesn’t have a problem with Japanese or Asian people. He respects them. He thinks that they are smarter. He just hates blacks and Mexicans.”

“Huh?”

“It’s the reason he put me in Karate. He figured if I knew Martial Arts, I could protect myself…”

“Against blacks and Mexicans?”

“That.”

“Let me ask you something. You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to, okay?” Sway nodded. “Did you tell Rosebud and Mandy how racist your father was?”

“Yes.”

“So when they exposed you. Did they…?”

“Let him know that Rosebud was black?”

“Yeah…”

“Made sure he knew.”

“Damn, that’s fucked up.”

“I think I know where you’re going.”

“I’m horrified at the thought of it, Sway. It can’t be.” She wiped a tear from her cheek. “I didn’t mean to upset you.”

“No, you’re making me better.” She readjusted, sitting up straight. “It was bad enough that I was in the trouble I was in… They would have taken me back in, no problem. Would have gotten me the help I needed… Some counseling to get my mind right.

“Then, back in school and I would have been on my way. The perfect American girl who was a victim who’d overcome all odds and still made something of herself.

“But no… Because I was kidnapped and was being abused by a black man, that fucking somehow made a difference to them. How fucked up is that, Andre?”

“I have no words.”

“But I have you, though. I know that. That’s all I need.”

DOPE BOY CHRONICLES – EPISODE #1.28 – SWAY’S REVENGE

CHEVRON – NORTHWEST HIGHWAY – 10:17 p.m.

A car pulled behind us and stopped.

I checked my mirrors. It was Mandy’s Cadillac.

“Stay here, Sway.” As her door swung open, I quickly stepped out, heading towards her.

She stood smiling. “Andre!”

“Don’t ever pull up on me like that.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Two times this week… Is this like your new spot or something?”

“Yeah, I’ve been having good luck ever since I saw you. I tried calling…”

“What’s up?”

“I have your money!” She pulled a stack of cash from her hip pocket. “Here… This is what I owe you, and this is for a hundred if you have one.”

I did a quick count. “You gave me too much…”

“No, that’s you… For looking out.”

“If you got it like that. Thanks. Hold on.”

She peered through the rear window tint. “I didn’t know you had someone with you.”

“Yeah, just a friend.” I kept Mandy in my peripheral vision as I leaned in. “Hand me a hundred, Sway.”

“Did she see me?”

“She knows somebody’s in the car, but she doesn’t know it’s you. Just wait right here, I’ll only be a second.”

Mandy grinned. “Yeah, Andre. I’m up and down here every day. They’re doing all this road construction… Those tricks are easy money, too. No problems.”

“Well, I’m glad you’re back up… I’ll get with you though… We’re about to go and hang out. Chill.”

“You got a girlfriend now? What’s her name? Can I meet her?”

“Maybe some other time.”

“Come on, Andre. Let me meet the girl.”

I firmed. “Another time, Mandy.”

“Be like that…” Suddenly, her face was flushed with shock. Her eyes widened. “What the fuck?!”

“How long are you going to keep my man out here, bitch?!” Sway leapt with hands to Mandy’s throat, taking her to the ground.

“Bitch! I’m going to fuck you up! Get off me, bitch! Get off me!”

Sway got her footing. She began swinging long and wide, tagging Mandy with fists to the head and to the face.

She pushed Sway away, making it to her feet, but it was brief. Following two uppercuts, one to the chin and the other to the nose, Mandy toppled over onto her back.

“Owe! Alright! Alright!” Sway continued, pounding, pummeling, punch after punch. “Make her stop, Andre! Please make her stop. It hurts!”

“Oh, it hurts, bitch?! You didn’t give a fuck about me when I was being hurt, did you?!”

“I’m sorry!”

“When Rosebud was kicking my ass, you didn’t say a word, bitch!”

“What was I supposed to do?! He was going to beat me, too! I was scared!”

“You laughed, bitch! I saw you! You thought it was fucking funny! You enjoyed that shit! Now enjoy me whipping your ugly ass, ho!”

Sway moved in with kicks to the ribs, legs, arms, and to Mandy’s breast. “Andre, please!” A stomp to the head slammed Mandy’s face into the brittle concrete, opening a deep gash across her brow. Blood spurted, painting the pavement a bright crimson. “Oh my god!”

“Don’t call god, bitch! God can’t help you tonight!”

Mandy tried clumsily to stand. Her legs were stretched behind her. Her palms flat as she attempted to right herself.

With her heels, Sway crushed at Mandy’s hands and fingers.

Mandy gave up, accepting her fate. She collapsed into a fetal ball, lying in her own blood, battered and defeated.

Sway leaned over, scolding. “Next time, bitch, get permission from me to address my man. You do it again, bitch, and I’ll break you down.” Sway paused. “Bitch, what are you carrying? How much you got?” She searched her pockets, pulling out a few small bills. “Give me that coke back, too, bitch!”

Sway rifled through the Cadillac. She held up a roll of cash. “Got it!”

“That’s Rosebud’s money, Sway! He’s going to kill me.”

“What, bitch?! It’s my man’s money now!”

CLUB ECSTASY – PARKING LOT – 10:38 p.m.

The line was outside the door and along the side of the building. Sway was checking her makeup as I sorted out the coke.

“You think you can handle all of these?” I opened the Ziploc. “I can give you half now, and maybe we can come back and get the rest.”

Sway snatched it from my hand. “Stay right here.”

She opened the door. “Wait, what?”

“Stay right here. I’ll be back in five minutes.”

“Sway…”

She sped across the lot between the parked cars, taking the back of the line. Within moments, a crowd gathered around her.

I began to get nervous. I’d made up my mind. I was going to go and get her.

However, my worries were relieved. Sway was hurrying towards me. I drove up ahead, meeting her. She hopped in. “Go!”

I made a U-turn heading towards the exit. “What’s going on?! What happened?!”

“Security was coming.”

“Why didn’t we just go in like planned? Now what are we going to do with all those twenties?”

“What twenties?”

“The…” Sway smiled, flashing the Ziploc. It was filled with cash.
